City Scouts set to finish big cleanup Print

City scouts are set to finish a big clean-up after receiving a helping hand from the Coventry Best for Business team.

Adults and youngsters from the association have been working to tidy a 200-yard drive leading to leading cotton and eco-friendly bag retailer Midpac in Tile Hill - after the company gave the Baden Powell Coventry 32nd Scouts use of vans earlier in the year.

And after toiling away for four weeks to remove trees, weeds and litter, the dedicated group of Coventrians are close to finishing.

The group filled their refuse skip after collecting a mound of waste and they needed to hire another one.

But when Andrew Vale of the Coventry Best for Business team visited the area and saw the improvement to the local environment, he offered to supply a skip free of charge.

Bob Mallin, who helped to organise the clean-up, said: "Midpac has been very generous by letting us use its vans for the Coventry Gang Show for free - so to repay the goodwill and to help improve the local area, we decided to help tidy up the drive.

"Most of the work has involved weeding and removing troublesome trees and their stumps - so we've needed skips to help clear the waste.

"It's taken a few weeks and we got to a point where we needed another skip - and we are very grateful to Coventry Best for Business for helping us out.

"This should finish off the clean-up and the drive looks a lot better and has definitely improved the look of the area."

Coventry Best for Business, which is funded by 2,500 businesses across the city, aims to improve the local working environment for companies and organisations.

Andrew Vale, who acts as a business area champion for Torrington Avenue and Binns Close, said: "I noticed during the course of the visits that the site was being tidied and made the local area look a lot better.

"I managed to speak to Bob and he was saying they were getting towards the end of the clean-up but they needed to hire another skip. Their efforts are benefiting the whole of the area, so I was able to arrange the free use of a skip from a local firm.

"Their efforts certainly help one of the Best for Business priorities, which is to make Coventry a cleaner, tidier city to work in."
