Council: Stick to BID, not supplementary Print
The deputy leader of Coventry City Council has promised to work with small businesses by rejecting government plans to introduce local supplementary business rates on top of the BID levy.

Cllr Kevin Foster (Con), who is also a prospective parliamentary candidate, will work with Coventry Best for Business to fight against proposals which would see businesses charged an extra levy by the council.

If the proposal goes ahead, councils would be given the power to charge additional rates for specific initiatives or extra services in the area.

But Cllr Foster, who is also a Cabinet Member for Finance, Procurement and Value for Money, believes that extra levies at a time of rising fuel prices and the credit crunch would be detrimental to local firms.

"It's clear that these are challenging times for all businesses, but small local businesses may find it particularly difficult to deal with extra pressures like rises in the cost of fuel," said Cllr Foster.

"Many small companies are now concerned that as well as meeting these challenges they may have to pay extra rates on top of their business rate and the BID levy.

"While we are always looking at ways of providing better services for local residents and businesses, we appreciate this can't come at the expense of the local economy.

“While the BID is in place, we will not be seeking to levy any supplementary business rates, and that we will work together to ensure that the Council does what it can to encourage small businesses, which are the lifeblood of our flourishing economy in the city."
